It took Angelica’s equipment fifteen minutes to glut itself on Contessa’s death magic. The transformation to dracolich blood bone was a hungry process, and hundreds of thousands of undead had perished in its transformation, leaving the city and palace as silent as the grave. Further growth would be slow as the dracolich nature of the armour could only reinforce itself so quickly, but her batteries were topped up, so it wouldn’t slow down for several days.

I was lounging on Contessa’s couch, entertaining her daughter Davina when Contessa finally returned in a fresh new body. Based on its smell, it was clone of her previous one, which meant she wouldn’t have to adapt to it. I had found Davina wandering aimlessly through the halls. Her undead minder had crumbled to dust, leaving her without direction. She found the story of my fight with her mother entertaining, giggling mischievously as I describe the way she withered under Angelica’s grasp.

Davina had always suspected her mother was not being honest with her when it came to her condition and was fully aware of her evil nature, yet powerless to do anything. Revealing the truth of her condition had endeared me to her, and we were fast approaching friendship.

Contessa wandered through the rubble wearing a powerful black silk robe, stitched with thousands of small but powerful runes. The head of the equally powerful sceptre bounced off her palm as she approached. “You are in my chair, vampire.”

“You were indisposed,” I replied, lazily.

“You have gutted my court and purged my house.”

“You opened our negotiation, and I presented you with my counteroffer.”

“Now, I have the upper hand.”

“You assumed so last time, too.”

She paused, considering my words. She was risk-averse, a type-A personality that always needed to be in control. I had shattered her expectations. Now, instead of fleeing, I remained for her to find me. To someone like her, it meant I held hidden cards. It meant I was still in control.

I was, of course, bluffing.

Without Angelica’s armour to drain her, and with no more holy smite potions, we were entirely at her mercy.

“What are your terms?” she eventually asked.

“What are your requirements?”

“I need to dissect you, submitting your flesh to every conceivable form of harm. Samples, reactions, reductions, everything you can possibly imagine will be done to your flesh as I search for the secrets of its creation. Finally, I will need to know your limits.”

“You mean destroy me.”

“Yes.”

“That will be off the table.”

She scowled.

“Is there anything else?”

“Unlikely. I can study what I need with samples.”

“You have a very limited imagination. You play this much too safe.”

“Your terms.”

“I would like you to study how my bloodline, physique, and regeneration are strengthened. I would also like access to all your research, not the dead-end fluff you keep in the library. Your true research and personal library.”

“For this you will submit yourself to my experiments?”

“Yes, but I would also like you to answer a question for me.”

"What question?”

“Why did you abandon experimenting on your daughter? The results were promising.
